Jackson police officer James Bonneau, 26, died in an area hospital, sheriff's officials said.

"We express sympathy to his family and to the city of Jackson and to the entire community," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "It's a terrible tragedy."

Injuries to Blackman Township officer Darrin McIntosh were not believed to be life-threatening, officials said.

Investigators said the two law enforcement officers entered Potts's home, following up on a complaint. The sheriff's office's statement said Potts took out a handgun and fired several shots at the officers, with one officer returning fire.

Bonneau is the first Jackson Police officer to die in the line of duty since 1978, the newspaper said.
