Lt. gov. to challenge Arkansas' Lincoln

WASHINGTON, March 1 (UPI) -- Arkansas Lt. Gov. Bill Halter officially announced Monday he will challenge U.S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln, already seen as vulnerable, in the Democratic primary.

Halter, in a video announcing his bid, said he was seeking the Democratic nod because Washington "is no longer working" for neighborhoods or families in Arkansas, The Washington Post reported.

"Washington is broken," he said in the video. "Enough is enough. It is past time to put more Arkansas values in Washington."

Halter, elected lieutenant governor in 2006, is the third high-profile Democrat to challenge an incumbent in a party primary. In Pennsylvania, Rep. Joe Sestak is running against Sen. Arlen Specter in Specter's first run as a Democrat in decades. In Colorado, former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff is taking on Sen. Michael Bennet, who was appointed to fill the seat vacated when Ken Salazar was appointed interior secretary last year.
