County snubs Kilpatrick's lifestyle motion

DETROIT, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Prosecutors Wednesday urged dismissal of a motion that contends former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick requires an upscale lifestyle for professional reasons.

The motion filed by Kilpatrick's lawyer this week says the former mayor should not be required to make a court-ordered $79,011 restitution payment because he needs the money to maintain appearances for his new profession as a computer salesman in Texas.

Wayne County prosecutors retorted that the motion was "essentially a rant" that ignored the money Kilpatrick's actions in office cost Motor City taxpayers.

The Detroit Free Press said the county's motion called Kilpatrick's motion "remarkable" and "in no way meets the standard of the court rule."

The Michigan Court of Appeals could rule on the matter at any time. If the court sides with the prosecution, Kilpatrick could face probation-violation charges for missing the payment.
