Police: Man killed amid frying pan attack

NEW YORK, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Police in New York allege officers were forced to shoot a man after he ignored the officers' demands he stop beating his mother with a frying pan.

New York Police said a police sergeant and officer found the male suspect, whose identity was not released, allegedly beating his mother in an apartment Sunday night and ordered the man to drop his weapon, the New York Daily News said Monday.

Authorities allege the 32-year-old man ignored the officers' orders and appeared to be preparing to strike his mother again, prompting the officers to open fire.

A total of six shots were fired during the incident, which ended with the suspect's death.

Unidentified sources said the suspect's mother was in critical condition with injuries ranging from a fractured skull to a compound left arm fracture.

The cause of the deadly incident remains unknown.

A high-ranking police official, whose identity was not released, told the Daily News the suspect "has a history of psychiatric issues."
