One hurt, one arrested in campus shooting

DEKALB, Ill., Feb. 19 (UPI) -- A student was injured in a shooting Friday at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, Ill., the university said.

The early-morning incident occurred near Stevenson Residence Hall and the injured NIU student was taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital, the Chicago Tribune reported.

University officials said a suspect was in custody and that the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident.

The university Web site said the campus was open and all classes would be held.

"Campus alert status: All clear, Shooting on campus; suspect in custody," a message on the site said.

Daniela Bedolla, 22, told the Tribune she was studying in her room in Stevenson when she heard a single gunshot.

"It was really loud," Bedolla said. "I just thought it was drunk kids fooling around, or a car backfiring or something."

Last week marked the second anniversary of a mass shooting in which five students were killed in a lecture hall on the campus. Nineteen others were injured, and the gunman, 27-year-old graduate student Steven Kazmierczak, fatally shot himself before police arrived.
