Suspects in torture killing have head lice

GREENSBURG, Pa., Feb. 18 (UPI) -- A hearing in western Pennsylvania for six people charged with a torture-killing has been postponed because they have head lice, officials said Thursday.

District Judge James Albert's office said the hearing set for Thursday morning was rescheduled for March 4, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

The three men and three women, all residents of Greensburg, allegedly killed Jennifer Daugherty, 30, after humiliating and torturing her for more than a day. Daugherty, described by her family as mentally challenged, was beaten, forced to consume urine, spices and cooking oil and finally stabbed.

Ricky Smyrnes, 23, Robert Masters Jr., 36, Melvin Knight, 20, Peggy Miller, 27, Amber Meidinger, 20, and Angela Marinucci, 17, are being held under suicide watch in the Westmoreland County Jail. Warden John Walton said they are isolated from each other so they cannot discuss the case and from other inmates who might try to attack them.

"Even the inmates have a code of conduct, where they think things aren't very kosher," Walton said.
