Poll: Reagan, Clinton New Jersey faves

WEST LONG BEACH, N.J., Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Former presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton led the charts as New Jerseyans' favorite presidents, a Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey Poll indicated.

Third place honors go to John F. Kennedy, while Abraham Lincoln and current leader Barack Obama tied for fourth, poll results released Monday, Presidents Day, said. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was in sixth place.

George Washington, for whom the holiday was created, landed in a seventh place tie with Harry S. Truman.

Rounding out Garden Staters' all-time top 10 favorite presidents are Jimmy Carter and George W. Bush.

"Ronald Reagan garners the most bipartisan support of any president, but is especially revered among his fellow Republicans here in New Jersey," said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute in West Long Beach, N.J. "But among the state's oldest residents, John F. Kennedy is also remembered with great fondness."

Reagan was named by 24 percent of respondents and Clinton was cited by 22 percent, the survey indicated.

The Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey Poll was conducted by telephone with 803 New Jersey adults Jan. 27-31.The margin of error is 3.5 percentage points.
