Northwestern gunman search comes up empty

CHICAGO, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Northwestern University's Chicago campus was reopened Wednesday after a search for a reported gunman failed to turn up a suspect, officials said.

A release issued by the university said an intensive search of the campus prompted by a report of a man with a gun in his waistband was carried out but no one matching the description of the man was found.

The campus was put on lockdown Wednesday after someone reported seeing an armed man in an elevator on the 11th floor of the Rubloff building, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Faculty and students in the building were warned to lock their doors and law students told the newspaper people in a lecture hall were told to get under their desks.

Police reportedly described the man as a white male in his 20s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, brown-blond hair, wearing a button-down shirt, blue jean and a black jacket.

Although no suspects were found, Northwestern officials said an investigation into the report would be ongoing.
