Court rejects review of Noriega case

WASHINGTON, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- The U.S. Supreme Court Monday refused to review the case of former Panamanian strongman Manuel Noriega, who is trying to avoid extradition to France.

If convicted of money laundering charges in France, Noriega, 75, could face another 10 years behind bars, Fox News reported.

Only Justice Clarence Thomas commented on the rejection of review. Thomas said he would have granted review to explore the role of the Geneva Conventions in the aftermath of high court decisions that granted the right of constitutional review to detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Justice Antonin Scalia signed on to Thomas's opinion.

Noriega was captured during the U.S. invasion of Panama in 1989 and was later convicted of drug trafficking. He was eligible for release in 2007, Fox News said, but has remained behind bars while fighting extradition to France.
