Tornado damage confirmed in Florida

MELBOURNE, Fla., Jan. 22 (UPI) -- A tornado touched down Friday in Brevard County, Fla., damaging several homes, the National Weather Service said.

The Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported the tornado touched down during the morning hours and was on the ground for 6 miles, tearing the roofs and porches off homes in Melbourne, Fla., and apparently tipping over at least one tractor-trailer rig in the county. The EF-0 twister, which reached wind speeds up to 75 mph before dissipating at Merritt Island, resulted in one minor injury, the newspaper said.

The Sentinel said heavy storms in Osceola County, Fla., caused a restaurant's roof to collapse, and flooded area canals, retention ponds and streets. No injuries were reported at the damaged restaurant.

Meanwhile, at least four possible tornadoes were reported to have threatened parts of northern Florida Thursday night.

The St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reported the suspected tornadoes, fueled by a low-pressure system, destroyed a mobile home in Thonotosassa, Fla., while flipping numerous cars and downing trees in the region.

Despite the damage, no injuries were reported.
