Jewish center killer given life in prison

SEATTLE, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- The man who shot up a Jewish center in Seattle in 2006, killing one woman and wounding five, was sent to prison for life Thursday without the chance of parole.

King County Superior Court Judge Paris Kallas tacked on 120 years to Naveed Haq's sentence for good measure, SeattlePostIntelligencer.com reported. It was the maximum sentence possible, the online newspaper said.

The 34-year-old man, whose attorneys argued was not anti-Semitic but had a long history of mental illness, was convicted after two trials of killing Pamela Waechter and wounding five other women.

Haq used his sentencing hearing to offer thanks that he hadn't wreaked more havoc and ask for forgiveness.

"I thank God every day for the life of Dayna Klein and her baby," said Haq, referring to a pregnant woman who survived his shooting spree. "I pray for forgiveness every day for the death of Pamela Waechter. I hope that the victims and their families can take this to heart. I am not a man full of hate. That was not the real Naveed Haq."

The other wounded employees were Carol Goldman, Layla Bush, Christina Rexroad and Cheryl Stumbo.

Despite laws barring the purchase of firearms by the mentally ill, Haq was able to buy several guns in the weeks before his attack. He lied on questionnaire required for the purchases.
