FORT WORTH, Texas, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Authorities in Texas said an Italian greyhound led an animal control officer to the pond where its owner had drowned.
Animal Control officer Charles Hernandez said he was investigating reports of a drowning Rottweiler Monday in Fort Worth when the greyhound ran up to him and started barking, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Tuesday.
Hernandez said he followed the dog to where he discovered a jacket, car keys and cellphone belonging to the animal's owner, Andrea Benua, 34.
"That's when I knew something was wrong," Hernandez said. "I figured two things: We either had someone who got snatched up or somebody went in the water after the dog that was drowning."
Fort Worth Fire Department divers searched the iced-over pond next to the pile of items and pulled out the bodies of Benua and her two other dogs, a Rottweiler puppy and another Italian greyhound.
Police said they are investigating Benua's death. The Italian greyhound who led Hernandez to the pond ran off and remains on the loose.
