Seven Tijuana police officers held

TIJUANA, Mexico, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Seven Tijuana police officers have been detained for an investigation into alleged ties to a drug gang, Mexican prosecutors say.

The federal Attorney General's Office said Luis Gilberto Sanchez Guerrero, nicknamed "El Gil," an alleged lieutenant in the gang led by Teodoro Garcia Simental, is also under 40-day detention, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The police officers are suspected of working for Sanchez.

Julian Leyzaola, the Tijuana secretary for public safety, said the officers include two members of his security detail, both assigned to public buildings, not to his personal bodyguards. They also include a supervisor and a chief of police.

Sanchez, a former Tijuana police officer, was arrested Dec. 29. He allegedly participated in drug-related killings and in a failed attempt to assassinate Leyzaola.
