Florida GOP chairman faces calls to resign

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Florida Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer was facing pressure from party donors Wednesday to resign, analysts said.

Greer was the target of a letter signed by a dozen major state GOP backers urging him to step down to resolve "a crisis in confidence," the Tallahassee (Fla.) Democrat reported.

"We do not take this call for action lightly," the letter reportedly read. "It is even more agonizing to publicly call for this plan of action but it would not have come to this had Jim Greer heeded warning calls and implemented a strategic plan of action for our Republican candidates as a competent state chairman should and would."

The newspaper said Greer, who is supported by Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, has resisted calls for his resignation and has indicated he will discuss party finances and operations.

The party is roiling from leaked confidential financial information showing an alleged $4 million gap between expenses and fundraising proceeds, the Democrat said, adding that former party Vice Chairman Allen Cox has organized a petition to remove Greer.
