Washington state deputy dies of wounds

SEATTLE, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- A sheriff's deputy in Washington state has died of gunshot injuries sustained while breaking up a domestic dispute, officials say.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said Deputy Kent Mundell, 44, was taken off life support Monday at Seattle's Harborview Medical Center, Seattle's KOMO-TV reported.

Troyer said Mundell was surrounded by his wife and children when he died.

"Obviously everybody was waiting for a miracle, and it didn't come," Troyer said. "The fact that he survived as long as he did is amazing, and that's why, I think, people were hoping for a miracle. But it just wasn't meant to be. The wounds were too severe, and he has passed on."

Authorities said Mundell and his partner, Sgt. Nick Hausner, were shot last week allegedly by David Crable as they tried to remove Crable from a home in Eatonville. Hausner is reported recovering from a gunshot wound to his neck.

KOMO said a Jan. 5 memorial for Mundell has been tentatively scheduled at the Tacoma Dome, to which the public has been invited.
