Defeated Detroit candidate seeks probe

DETROIT, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Defeated Detroit mayoral candidate Tom Barrow says election canvassers should resign because of their decisions about his demand for a recount.

Barrow told Monday's Detroit News that the Wayne County Board of Canvassers decided none of the 41,485 absentee ballots cast in the Nov. 3 election between him and declared winner Dave Bing would be included in a recount he has demanded, prompting Barrow to demand a full investigation and the resignations of the Detroit Board of Canvassers.

"When we add in the earlier breaches ruled on by the county, unexplained discrepancies, seal mismatches and other violations, which they saw as clear and compelling anomalies, we approach some 61,234 ballots that could not be recounted," said Barrow, who lost to Bing by 70,060 votes to 50,757 votes. "That is nearing 50 percent of the vote."

But Bing attorney John Pirich told the News Barrow's claims were "utter nonsense," saying the uncounted votes -- which won't be thrown out, just not included in the recount -- won't change the election results.

"It does not in any way, shape or form change the integrity of the election," Pirich reportedly said.
