LANSING, Mich., Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm said the bill she signed into law Friday will protect people from second-hand smoke by banning smoking in most workplaces.
The measure Granholm signed in Lansing will effectively end smoking in all public and work areas throughout Detroit starting May 1 with the gambling floors of the Detroit's three casinos exempted, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Also exempt from the ban are tribal casinos and Michigan's cigar bars and tobacco specialty shops. Homes and vehicles that are used for employment in the state also are not covered.
"People who congregate -- workplaces, restaurants, bars -- they will be ensured of a healthy environment," Granholm said. "If you go there to enjoy a meal, you can return home without your clothes smelling or feeling like you've potentially inhaled something that's harmful to you or to your family."
The statewide ban includes restaurants' outdoor dining areas.
