MARIETTA, Ga., Dec. 9 (UPI) -- The 12-year-old Tampa, Fla., boy accused of killing his infant cousin in a Georgia parking lot was prepared to go to trial Wednesday.
The unidentified youth faces felony murder and cruelty to children charges in Cobb County Juvenile Court in Marietta, Ga., the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reported.
The boy was visiting relatives in Georgia when he was left alone with the 5-week-old girl in a parking lot while the baby's mother stopped to pick up some picnic food. When the woman returned, she found the infant unresponsive and took the girl to the hospital. A medical examiner determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
The case will be tried before a judge only, the Times said.
The boy has been in Georgia since July, first detained in a juvenile detention center, then transferred to a secure group home.
