Clinton: No Italian contacts on Knox case

WASHINGTON, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says she has not contacted Italy about the murder conviction of U.S. student Amanda Knox.

Asked Sunday on ABC's "This Week" if she had taken any concerns to the Italian government about the fairness of a guilty verdict rendered last week against Washington state native Amanda Knox in the 2007 slaying of her British roommate, Clinton said she hadn't had time to deal with the case.

"I honestly haven't had time to even examine that," Clinton said. "I've been immersed in what we're doing in Afghanistan."

Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., said she has "serious questions about the Italian justice system and whether anti-Americanism tainted this trial," in which Knox, an Italian boyfriend and a third person were convicted of killing Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy, in what Italian prosecutors said was a sex game gone bad.

"Of course, I'll meet with Senator Cantwell, or anyone who has a concern, but I can't offer any opinion about that at this time," Clinton said.
