Meanwhile, a winter weather advisory was in place for Austin, Colorado, Jackson, Matagorda, Washington and Wharton counties.

Most areas will only see an inch of accumulation, but certain areas could see as much as four inches of snow Friday, the weather service said.

The Houston Chronicle said Friday's snow represented the city's earliest snowfall on record.

The wintery weather facing Houston and other parts of Texas has prompted warnings of icy roads due to an expected 12-hour freeze period from sundown Friday to early Saturday.

Meanwhile, portions of Massachusetts, North Carolina and Virginia are expected to face their first snowstorm of the season this weekend, AccuWeather.com reported.

Snow was expected to last into Saturday may also hit Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia, New York and Washington.
