LOS ANGELES, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Los Angeles police said Thursday that Alexandra Forbes Kerry, eldest daughter of U.S. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., is accused of driving under the influence.

The Boston Herald said Alexandra Forbes Kerry, 36, was arrested early Thursday for allegedly driving under the influence after being stopped by police for a traffic violation.

Los Angeles police Officer Sara Faden would not specify what substance Kerry was allegedly used or what her blood-alcohol level may have been.

Kerry, who is free on $5,000 bail, is scheduled to appear in Los Angeles Municipal Court on Dec. 10.

Faden told the Herald that a DUI charge is considered a misdemeanor in California.

Jodi Seth, a spokeswoman for Sen. Kerry, said in a statement his daughter was pulled over for an expired registration and added the results of a Breathalyzer test at the police station showed a blood-alcohol level below the legal limit.

"Senator Kerry supports his daughter and will have no further comment on a private matter," Seth said.

Kerry is an independent filmmaker whose cinematic works include the 2008 documentary "Be Like Others" and the 2004 short film "The Last Full Measure."
