Mom says Columbine killer mentally ill

NEW YORK, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Susan Klebold says her son, Dylan, had an undiagnosed mental illness when he carried out the Columbine High School massacre in Colorado.

In an O magazine article published Tuesday, Klebold said she only learned of her son's journals after he and Eric Harris killed 13 people at the school in 1999 and then took their own lives. In one entry, the 17-year-old Dylan described himself as an "outcast" and said people were "conspiring" against him.

"When I first saw copied pages of these writings, they broke my heart," his mother wrote. "I'd had no inkling of the battle Dylan was waging in his mind."

She said Dylan was both depressed and suicidal. If he had not wanted to end his own life, she believes the other killings would not have taken place.

Gayle King, the magazine's editor at large, told ABC's "Good Morning America" Klebold only went public this year because her son's death took her "10 years to process."

Klebold said she sent letters to some of the families of victims apologizing for her son's actions. But she said her therapist advised her to stop sending them because some families found them difficult to deal with.
