"We have had the opportunity to see first-hand how important the dogs are to these men and women who risk their lives every day to protect us," Roethlisberger said.

The dog donation ahead of Sunday's matchup between the Steelers and the Detroit Lions was applauded by Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans.

"In these difficult budgetary times, we must rely more and more on outside sources of funding to support our officers' efforts," Evans told the News. "This grant will provide our officers additional resources to protect the citizens of Detroit."
