U.N. worried about terrorism re-emerging in Mali

NEW YORK, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A statement issued from the Jordanian presidency of the U.N. Security Council warns terrorist groups in Mali have reorganized.

Mali in January 2013 called in support from former colonial power France to help fight off al-Qaida and nomadic rebels who took control over northern Mali following a 2012 coup.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in November said Mali had taken an important step forward with its post-conflict recovery through legislative elections, but the U.N. Security Council said threats may be re-emerging.

Jordan, serving as the rotating head of the U.N. Security Council, issued a three-page presidential statement Thursday saying terrorist groups were making a comeback.

"The Security Council expresses concern about the fragile security situation in the north of Mali, including the recent incidents that revealed that terrorists and other armed groups have reorganized themselves and regained some ability to operate," the statement read.

The statement the Malian government has the primary responsibility for ensuring national security. It added, however, it was in full support of a U.N. mission mandated to use "all necessary means" to stabilize the country.
