Brazzaville travel warning scaled down by British government

LONDON, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- The British government scaled down a travel advisory for the Republic of Congo, saying recent conflict in the capital Brazzaville was an isolated event.

The government this week issued a travel alert for the Republic of Congo following reports of heavy gunfire in the capital city. The government said Tuesday it was still advising caution but scaled down the severity of the warning.

"There were reports of fighting and sporadic gunfire in Brazzaville on [Monday]," the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office said in its advisory. "This is believed to have been an isolated incident as a result of resistance during a military arrest."

Supporters of former Col. Marcel Ntsourou fought with Congolese forces this week. He was sentenced to five years hard labor for his role in a March 2012 explosion at an army depot, which left nearly 300 people dead.

The British government said it was monitoring the situation in the Republic of Congo from its embassy in DRC because it doesn't have a diplomatic presence in the Brazzaville.
