U.S. clarifies embassy status in Yemen

SANAA, Yemen, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- The U.S. Embassy in Sanaa, Yemen, said it remains closed to regular consular services, nearly three weeks after a regional terrorism alert.

The U.S. State Department announced Aug. 2 it was closing more than a dozen embassies in the region as a security precaution. The warning said it was concerned al-Qaida may be targeting strategic interests in the region.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said during a Tuesday press conference "the American Embassy in Yemen reopened." The Washington Post reported the embassy opened for "limited public services" Aug. 18.

Yemen downplayed the security risk through its official Saba News Agency, highlighting its outreach efforts with visiting foreign officials. The embassies of some European countries reopened since the Aug. 2 warning.

The U.S. Embassy in Sanaa published a question-and-answer briefing Saturday clarifying its status.

"The U.S. Embassy in Sanaa is currently closed for routine consular services," it said. "The embassy will announce on its website when normal services resume and appointments for routine services can be scheduled."

Yemen's official news agency reported one person was killed and several other were injured in the Sunday bombing of a bus carrying military personnel to their headquarters at an air force base near the capital city. No statement of responsibility was published by the news agency.
