LONDON, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- The British government rolled out a cybersecurity strategy Tuesday it says will help combat cyber threats that "are growing in number and sophistication."
The Government Communications Headquarters, the British intelligence agency in charge of so-called signals intelligence, announced it was teaming up with its private-sector counterparts to provide the information needed to respond to the consequences of cyberattacks.
"We know that U.K. organizations are confronted with cyber threats that are growing in number and sophistication," British Minister for Cybersecurity Chloe Smith said in a statement.
She said the government's partnership with industry leaders would help build on existing guidelines launched for businesses last year.
PCWorld reported Tuesday the so-called Comment Crew, which it described as a "group of China-based hackers," was back at work targeting organizations opposed to Chinese government policies. It said the team was behind a major cyberattack highlighted by U.S. security company Mandiant, which in February said it traced cyberattacks on U.S. companies and government agencies to the Chinese military.
U.S. defense officials said cybersecurity was emerging alongside terrorism as a top national security concern.
Smith said Tuesday the latest defense was "part of our effort to provide assistance to industry and government in order to protect U.K. interests in cyberspace."
