ISTANBUL, Turkey, July 26 (UPI) -- Turkish authorities said Friday a cybertattack may have been responsible for dozens of flight delays at airports in Istanbul.
The Turkish daily Today's Zaman reports authorities believe a cyberattack shut down passport control systems at two facilities.
The newspaper reported one flight to Libya was canceled and dozens more were delayed before systems were back online by midafternoon, local time.
Demonstrations against plans to raze a historic park in downtown Istanbul last month erupted into deadly riots that gripped much of the country. No claim of responsibility or blame was attributed to the alleged cyberattack.
Cybersecurity has emerged as an emerging threat to national security in the digital age.
The U.S. and Chinese governments said they were reviewing cybersecurity threats at the working group level during mid-July talks in Washington. The U.S. Defense Department accused the Chinese military of targeting U.S. computer networks early this year, China denied the allegations.
The website of Russian news agency RIA Novosti was brought down last week briefly by a denial-of-service attack.
