GENEVA, Switzerland, July 26 (UPI) -- The United Nations announced plans Friday to dispatch a top human rights envoy to assess the situation in the Central African Republic
The United Nations said U.N. Secretary-General for Human Rights Ivan Simonovic heads Monday to CAR for a four-day mission.
The European Union announced July 11 it was releasing $10.2 million in emergency assistance for CAR. The EU estimates more than 200,000 people in CAR were displaced internally by conflict and 55,000 more have fled the country.
The rebel Seleka coalition in CAR is accused of committing war crimes in the country. It topped the government by force in March.
The United Nations said Simonovic will meet with members of a transitional government in CAR as well as religious and civil leaders.
European Commissioner for Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva said humanitarian agencies are working under "exceptionally challenging" circumstances in a country the International Committee of the Red Cross says is long forgotten.
U.N. special envoy to CAR Babacar Gaye told members of the Security Council during a Thursday session the Seleka rebel coalition was suspected of systematic killings of civilians.
