SEOUL, June 25 (UPI) -- The U.S. military needs to halt military exercises in the Asia-Pacific and end a policy of hostility for the sake of peace, the North Korean government said.
Tuesday marks the 63rd anniversary of the armistice agreement that ended the Korean War in the 1950s. North and South Korea remain technically at war.
The Rodong Sinmun, a newspaper affiliated with Pyongyang's ruling Workers' Party of Korea, said the U.S. nuclear arsenal is a threat to the region. If peace is to be ensured in the region, the United States needs to halt military drills in the region and stop acting with hostility toward North Korea, the Yonhap news agency in South Korea reports.
Multilateral talks aimed at addressing North Korea's nuclear ambitions halted in 2008. The North Korean government has conducted three underground nuclear tests since then.
North Korea recently proposed more direct talks with the U.S. and South Korean governments regarding the nuclear impasse. The proposal was dismissed because the initiative was viewed as lacking sincerity.
South Korean and Chinese leaders are expected to debate the issue later this month in Beijing.
A cyberattack Tuesday credited to the hacking activist group Anonymous defaced the website of the offices of South Korean President Park Geun-hye. Pro-North Korean propaganda was posted.
