QUETTA, Pakistan, April 30 (UPI) -- The killing of member of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Pakistan was an act of barbarism, the organization said.
The ICRC confirmed that Khalil Rasjed Dale, 60, was killed in Pakistan. He was kidnapped Jan. 5 by unidentified men, the organization said.
The ICRC said Dale had been working as a healthcare program manager in Quetta for nearly a year.
Pakistani newspaper Dawn reports Dale's decapitated body was found in an apple orchard. A police surgeon suggested he was killed with a knife but showed no signs of torture.
The Taliban had claimed responsibility for the kidnapping though it was unclear who was behind the slaying, Dawn reports.
"The ICRC condemns in the strongest possible terms this barbaric act," Director General Yves Daccord said in a statement.
The ICRC said in January it was scaling back its operations in the area.
