U.S., EU agree to curb WMD

NEW YORK, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- The United States and European Union signed a joint declaration aimed at developing measures to prevent the spread of WMD, the U.S. State Department said.

Officials during meetings at U.N. headquarters signed documents supporting U.N. resolutions designed to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction and the means to produce them.

The U.S. and European governments agreed to support U.N. activities that would help other counties with similar activity. Both measures are related to the implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolutions 1540 and 1977, which relate to WMD materials.

Yukiya Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said told delegates at a nuclear proliferation conference in Kazakhstan last week that the "unspeakable horror of nuclear bombs … must be eliminated."

Amano said he was committed to making the world free of nuclear weapons, a commitment outlined last year in Nagasaki, Japan, to mark the 65th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan by the United States.
