MINNEAPOLIS, June 10 (UPI) -- A man who set off a bomb at a Somali checkpoint in May was a 27-year-old man indicted by a Minneapolis grand jury on terrorism charges, the FBI said.
The FBI had said it was looking into claims that a suicide bomber who killed two peacekeepers in Somalia was a U.S. citizen from Minneapolis.
The African Union in a statement said insurgents disguised themselves as Somali forces during an attack on one of their posts in the country. Two members of the AU force were killed when an attacker detonated his explosives.
The FBI said fingerprint evidence identified one of the bombers as Farah Mohamed Beledi. He was incited in July by a grand jury in Minneapolis on terrorism offenses. He was one of 13 men charged with terrorism after traveling to Somalia to join al-Qaida affiliate al-Shabaab.
Beledi is believed to have left for Somalia in October 2009. The FBI said all of the men charged are part of an investigation into al-Shabaab's alleged recruitment activity in Minnesota, home to a large Somali population.
Al-Shabaab is attempting to create an Islamic state in Somalia, which hasn't had a functioning government since the 1990s. The al-Qaida-affiliated terrorist group has declared war on the AU peacekeeping force in the war-torn country.
