Rival claims Nigerian election flawed

ABUJA, Nigeria, April 25 (UPI) -- The election that brought a full term for Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan was fraudulent, the vice presidential candidate from a rival party claimed.

Jonathan won a full term as president by taking the majority of the votes in the last round of elections earlier this month.

However, Tunde Bakare, the vice presidential candidate from the Congress for Progressive Change, alleged the April 16 presidential contest was rigged, Nigeria newspaper NEXT reports.

Bakare said he could take the matter to the courts "not because we are bad losers but we are going to prove to the world that the election was fraudulent."

Bakare said in March before the election season go under way that he was taking part in the country's political process to restore the national reputation after 12 years of mismanagement under the ruling People's Democratic Party.

Conflicts erupted after Jonathan won his full term in office.

The International Committee of the Red Cross and the Nigerian Red Cross Society said there were "at least 12,000 displaced men, women and children" from post-election conflict.

Twenty-six of Nigeria's 36 states are to conduct gubernatorial elections Tuesday. Elections in two states were delayed because of the recent violence.
