Islamabad on high alert for attacks

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Militants operating in the Pakistani capital are plotting attacks on top military officials and members of Parliament, the Islamabad police chief said Tuesday.

Kaleem Imam, the inspector general for the Islamabad police, told reporters that security forces were on high alert in the capital.

"On the basis of intelligence information, security has been beefed up at sensitive locations in the federal capital," he was quoted by Pakistan's Dawn newspaper as saying.

Parts of Pakistan are underwater after monsoon rains soaked much of Central Asia. U.N. and international relief agencies are concerned about the humanitarian disaster as millions are affected by the flood.

The heartland of the Pakistani Taliban in the northwest tribal regions of the country has been particularly hard hit. Pakistani military forces have been percolating throughout the region in an effort to control militancy, but many of the troops are now forced to respond to relief efforts.

Military analyst Ayesha Siddiqa told Dawn last week that the Pakistani military has "too much on (its) plate" with the flood and the insurgency.

Imam said vigilance was needed on all fronts in the capital given the tense situation in the country.
