Supply convoy arrives safely in Darfur

KHARTOUM, Sudan, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- A convoy carrying much needed supplies safely reached the U.N.-African Union security operation in the volatile Darfur region of Sudan.

The convoy, which included 39 vehicles carrying security and peacekeeping equipment along with humanitarian relief provisions, traveled more than 550 miles from Central Sudan to reach the U.N.-AU Darfur operations, the United Nations reported.

Ongoing rebel violence along shipping routes has posed immense difficulties for any supplies to safely travel into Darfur. Officials say the journey has become more complicated as a result of the current rainy season.

While several convoys have been looted since August, officials said Tuesday that the convoy arrived with "much needed supplies from a U.N. logistics base in El Obeid (Sudan) to the operation in Darfur," the release said.

The equipment and supplies will go to support the ongoing policing operations that currently include approximately 10,000 military personnel.
