The meeting, which is being held until Oct. 17, is aimed at developing ways to strengthen international cooperation and also to review the convention's three protocols that address the trafficking of individuals and migrant smuggling along with firearms manufacturing and trafficking.

According to the convention, countries that have signed on are required to "create domestic criminal offenses to fight organized crime (and) facilitate extradition, mutual legal assistance, joint investigations and other forms of international cooperation to fight this transnational threat," the release said.
