TWIC program enrollment offices all open

WASHINGTON, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- The U.S. Transportation Security Administration announced Wednesday that all enrollment sites for its background security check program are now open.

The TSA says port workers, longshoremen and truckers, among other employees at U.S. ports, will be able to enroll in the Transportation Worker Identification Credential program at any of the fixed enrollment sites across the country, the TSA reported.

The TWIC program is part of an effort to ensure security at U.S. port facilities through extensive background checks on all persons who have unescorted access to secure areas. By October 2008, all port workers will be required to carry TWIC credentials.

"The completion of standing up every enrollment center is a testament to the progress of this important security program," Maurine Fanguy, TSA TWIC program director, said in a statement.

"We encourage workers to visit one of these sites as soon as possible to ensure their cards are in-hand in the coming months."
