Chertoff launches DHS blog, wants comments

WASHINGTON, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has started a blog "to open a dialogue with the American people about our nation’s security."

"I would like to hear your thoughts about the steps we’re taking to keep the nation safe," he wrote in his opening post Wednesday, inviting "fresh ideas and even constructive criticism" of the department. "This way, we can learn more about concerns you have within your states and communities."

The blog, called the Homeland Security Leadership Journal, and hosted on the department's Web site, allows members of the public to comment.

"We expect all contributors to be respectful," warns the blog's comment policy, adding that posts will be reviewed by a moderator before being added to the site. "We will not post comments that contain personal attacks of any kind; refer to Federal Civil Service employees by name; contain offensive terms that target specific ethnic or racial groups, or vulgar language."

It was unclear how much work moderators will have to do. More than 24 hours after the blog opened for business, only a single comment had been submitted.
