Death toll rises to 143 in club fire

PERM, Russia, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- The death toll from a nightclub fire in Perm, Russia, has risen to 143, said officials who allege inspectors failed to review the club's safety standards.

The inspectors could face charges for the Dec. 5 blaze at the Lame Horse club, sparked by an indoor fireworks display, RIA Novosti reported Saturday.

Safety inspectors issued a permit for the club in August without examining the premises, which included an illegal extension to the building and bricked-over windows, prosecutors said Friday.

Fumes from burning polystyrene used as sound insulation caused many of the deaths and injuries, authorities said.

An estimated 88 burn victims remained hospitalized Friday at clinics in Perm, Moscow and St. Petersburg, ITAR-Tass reported.
