SANTA ANA, Calif., Sept. 15 (UPI) -- The trial of a young California man charged with killing Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart while driving drunk is likely to be delayed by a change of lawyers.
A judge in Orange County named the Public Defender's Office to represent Andrew Thomas Gallo, 22, The Orange County Register reported. Gallo's previous lawyer said at a hearing Monday that he does not have the resources to hire experts he needs for an adequate defense.
Adenhart and two friends, Courtney Stewart, 20, a student at California State
Fullerton, and Henry Pearson, 25, a law student planning to become a sports agent, were killed in the crash in April. Jonathan Wilhite, 24, a former baseball star at Cal State Fullerton, was severely injured.
Gallo, who was convicted of drunken driving in 2006, was allegedly legally drunk when he hit Stewart's Mitsubishi broadside in Fullerton. He was indicted in June on three counts of murder.
He could receive a sentence of 55 years to life if he is convicted.
