Woman gets jail for fake kidnapping

DOYLESTOWN, Pa., Aug. 28 (UPI) -- A Pennsylvania woman who faked a kidnapping and took her daughter to Disneyworld has been sentenced to at least nine months in jail.

Bonnie Sweeten, 38, of Feasterville pleaded guilty Thursday to two misdemeanors, identity theft and false reports, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. She was sentenced to 9-24 months in prison and four years of probation

Bucks County Court Judge Jeffrey Finley called her "a calculating, manipulative, cold-blooded woman." While state guidelines called for probation, Finley said lawmakers "never contemplated Bonnie Sweeten."

Sweeten called 911 on May 26 claiming she had been carjacked by two black men and was in the trunk of the kidnappers' Cadillac. In fact, after placing the call, she left her car in Philadelphia and went to the airport with her 9-year-old daughter, using a co-worker's driver's license to buy plane tickets to Florida.

The same day, a check for $285,000 she had written to repay money taken from her ex-husband's 92-year-old grandfather bounced. She is also under investigation for financial irregularities at the law firm where she worked.

Sweeten's current husband has begun divorce proceedings.
