BOSTON, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- The funeral procession of Sen. Edward Kennedy will make a final visit to the U.S. Capitol Saturday en route to Arlington National Cemetery, his family said.

The stop outside the U.S. Senate will allow Kennedy's colleagues, staff and members of the public to bid a final farewell before his interment Saturday at Arlington near his brothers, President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy.

"Senator Kennedy served 47 years in the United States Senate, and loved each and every day he spent there, especially the people who are its heart and soul," the family said in a written statement.

The Hill said a memorial gathering Friday night in Boston would include Vice President Joe Bidden and Kennedy's fellow senators from both sides of the aisle.

Kennedy's body will be flown to Andrews Air Force Base Saturday following funeral services at which President Barack Obama will deliver a eulogy.

Thousands of spectators lined the route the motorcade took transporting Kennedy's body from Hyannis Port, Mass., to Boston Thursday.
