TRENTON, N.J., Aug. 7 (UPI) -- A New Jersey official says the new state law on monthly handgun purchases signed by New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine should be embraced by Pennsylvania.
Trenton Mayor Doug Palmer said the measure signed into law Thursday by Corzine should be implemented in neighboring Pennsylvania as well to aid in the fight against gun trafficking, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Friday.
"I just hope Pennsylvanians would make it safer for us by passing this bill," Palmer said.
The new state law limits the number of handguns an individual can legally purchase every 30 days in New Jersey to one. The law would also limit each individual to 13 handgun purchases a year.
Similar state laws are already in place in California, Maryland and Virginia.
Corzine said the state law, which will go into effect statewide in early January, should help limit handgun-related violence in his state.
"Nothing is more dangerous than to have the proliferation, the vast proliferation, of guns in the hands of individuals who want to perpetrate violence in our communities," Corzine said.
The Inquirer said the state law does not impact purchases of long guns such as rifles.
