Arrest made in Utah fraternity theft case

CEDAR CITY, Utah, June 22 (UPI) -- Police in Cedar City, Utah, say a former Southern Utah University fraternity member accused of stealing his fraternity's rent money has been arrested.

The Salt Lake Tribune said Sunday that former Sigma Nu fraternity treasurer Thomas Cleveland, 22, was arrested in Waco, Texas, on an arrest warrant issued in April by a 5th District Court judge.

Authorities allege in court documents that Cleveland routinely collected rent money from his fellow members at the SUU fraternity to pass along to their landlord.

But instead of paying the fraternity's rent, Cleveland allegedly kept the funds and left the collegiate brotherhood $8,000 behind on its rent.

Cleveland had already vanished from the university by the time the rent discrepancy was discovered, court documents said.

The Tribune said Cleveland, who has been released on a $10,000 bond since his Texas arrest, is facing a maximum 15-year prison sentence if convicted on a related theft charge.
