Sikh guru dies in Vienna sect clash

VIENNA, May 25 (UPI) -- A Sikh guru died Monday and another was hospitalized in stable condition one day after a sectarian clash at a temple in Vienna, Austrian officials said.

In addition to the surviving holy man, 14 others were hurt when a group of men from a rival Sikh sect armed with knives and a pistol attacked the temple during a ceremony, the BBC reported.

The British broadcaster said the attack appeared to be perpetrated by a group of fundamentalist Sikhs from a higher caste who accused the other group of disrespecting the Sikh holy book. Police said guru Sant Rama Anand died of his wounds early Monday, while the other holy man, Sant Nirajnan Das, was in stable condition.

Six people were taken into custody for the incident in Vienna's 15th district, police spokesman Schwaig Hofar told CNN. He said one suspect fired a gun at the two gurus while five other knife-wielding men attacked the gathered worshippers.

The Vienna clash reportedly triggered violence in the Indian city of Jalandhar, where Sikh protesters set fire to vehicles and erected roadblocks.
