WASHINGTON, May 20 (UPI) -- Advocates for senior citizens urged Congress to reinvest any savings they find in the U.S. Medicare system to improve healthcare for its recipients.
Speaking at a forum in Washington Wednesday, policy experts from a coalition of advocacy groups concluded that Medicare was a viable model for providing health services for the elderly.
The Obama administration is seeking to reduce spending on Medicare, which the panelists concluded offered an opportunity to improve the overall quality of the system.
"We know there will be savings found in Medicare to help pay for system-wide healthcare reform. But we must also ensure that some of those savings are reinvested back into the program to improve the care of millions of senior Americans," said Barbara Kennelly, president and chief executive officer of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.
The organization said in a written statement that Medicare was a likely target for government budget cutting and for ideas on overall healthcare reform.
