Congress questions Obama's Gitmo plans

WASHINGTON, May 8 (UPI) -- Congressional Republicans and Democrats are sharply questioning plans by President Obama to close the Guantanamo Bay military prison, officials say.

Reports point to a concern over the possibility that some detainees may end up on U.S. soil, the Washington Post said Friday.

Republicans say the issue is an example of Obama's weakness on national security and accuse him of endangering Americans.

While this was the latest GOP attempt to question the new president's national security policy, several Democrats now have joined Republicans in saying they don't want Guantanamo prisoners in their states or districts.

The Democratic-led House Appropriations Committee passed a bill Thursday to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but cut more than $50 million the administration wanted to finance closing the Cuba prison and relocating its 240 prisoners, the Post said.

Legislation was proposed that would prohibit moving Guantanamo prisoners to a continental U.S. facility until it's approved by leaders of the states involved.
