Heavy snow causes havoc in Sweden

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, March 11 (UPI) -- Road conditions remained slick in Sweden Wednesday following a heavy snow that caused more than 100 traffic accidents in the Stockholm area alone.

Thick snow and icy roads created traffic problems across the southern and central parts of the country Tuesday after a mammoth storm took residents by surprise, the Swedish news agency TT reports.

"From six in the morning until now we've had 108 accidents," a Stockholm police spokesman told TT Tuesday night.

There were reports of trucks skidding off the road in central Sweden and dozens of fender-bender accidents but police say the majority did not involve injury.

One serious crash between two cars in eastern Sweden claimed the life of an older man Tuesday afternoon.

Forecasts from the Swedish Roads Administration indicated the dangerous road conditions were expected to continue in many parts of the country.
