CONROE, Texas, March 1 (UPI) -- A 40-year-old naked man died shortly after being shocked by a sheriff deputy's stun gun in Conroe, Texas, authorities investigating the death said.
Montgomery County Sheriff's deputies were called to the home of Robert Lee Welch Saturday after the department received a call of a possible suicide attempt, The Houston Chronicle reported Sunday.
Welch was found wearing no clothes, was belligerent and would not respond to family members, the sheriff's office said, adding a Taser was used on Welch after he struggled with deputies trying to restrain him.
He then stopped breathing and was treated by paramedics at the scene who took him to a Conroe hospital where he was pronounced dead, the Chronicle reported
The death is under investigation by the sheriff's office, the Texas Rangers and the local district attorney.
Tasers can deliver a 50,000-volt electrical charge and critics say the weapons too often are used on people who have not committed crimes.
